“Safari yetu
Mbeya, tulifurahi sana
Wenyeji wetu Mbeya, walitukaribisha
Siku kuu ya wakulima…” .
That is an extract of a song by O’chestra Maquiz
du Zaire thanking the Mbeya people for according them a warm welcome when they visited Mbeya in
one of the National Festivals. The Mathematical Association of Tanzania
(MAT/CHAHITA) shares the same sentiment because Mbeya hosted its Annual General
Meeting (AGM) in Mbeya at the Mbeya Technical College now called Mbeya
Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in 1991. Mr Paul Kimiti was the the Mbeya
Regional Commissioner.
MAT/CHAHITA is a national mathematics
association formed in 1966 to help in raising mathematical education and its
applications in life among teachers, pupils and the general public. One of its
moor activity in the week-long programme is
the lecture of the year which is delivered by an eminent person selected by
the National Committee (NC) to talk about mathematics. In 1991,in Mbeya, the lecture
of the year was delivered by our Deputy President, Dr Haroub Bilal who was
then the Principal Secretary for the
Ministry of Science and Technology. He reminded participants on the use of
mathematics in quantum mechanics.
The AGM includes members of all levels of
education starting from primary to university. There is wrong belief that the
associate is for secondary schools and colleges. Last year, the AGM/Seminar was
held in Arusha at Makumira University College. It was noted that the attendance
for primary school teachers was very poor.
The AGM/Seminar this year (2013) will be conducted in Mbeya from 16th
to 21st September. It is expected the participation of primary
school teachers wil improve. Topics on geometry and algebra will be presented
by experts in teaching methods.
